A Moving Event when Liam Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Rosenior represents a top coach who knows the game back to front, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, as Chelsea's pioneering black footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the words of Paul Canoville, the man who made his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in April 1982.

This week, the club appointed Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their next manager following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show just 12 black head coaches – excluding individuals in interim positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that champions what's right… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Data Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's first black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other current Premier League boss of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout English football corresponds with an absence of representation in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023 report, 43% of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching level, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the figure is 2%.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of ability that exists within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become the fourth full-time British managers presently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's remaining big five leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

16 out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany while Ten of the 18 in France.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating for young English academy coaches to witness someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief spell at then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he received an MBE in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing a column for The Guardian, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill and said roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made a point he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He vowed his support for the inclusion campaign and authored an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues had the Premier League's pioneering African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
