An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
