The Fallout TV show has made a triumphant return to Prime Video, and it's fair to say that audiences were agreeably astonished by the excellence of its initial run. By illustrating the retro-futuristic, nuclear-ravaged United States through the eyes of three different characters, it effectively portrayed multiple facets of the gamer's adventure.

We followed vault-dweller Lucy, striving to act with integrity and learning that the wasteland made that incredibly hard; Brotherhood initiate Max, the militant faction rookie, who begins to question his cult's authority and creates plenty of trouble in robotic power armour; and Walton Goggins's character, a breakout character who has entirely abandoned any moral compass out in the irradiated wilderness.

Setting the Stage for Season Two

The debut season's ending unveiled crucial details about those responsible for the global annihilation that sealed a group of people in underground vaults for hundreds of years. It also raised plenty of questions unresolved for the second season – and, this time, anticipations are considerably elevated.

“We'd gladly accept ‘not terrible’ – let’s get that on a poster,” quips Jonah Nolan.

“Going into the initial season, people were like, ‘Just get it right’,” comments a key figure from the games. “We’re over the moon with the response to the show, so now people are arriving with more enthusiasm and altered expectations.”

The Mojave Beckons for Season Two

The second season is located in the neon-lit city, the backdrop of the 2010’s game Fallout: New Vegas, which is often praised for having the sharpest dialogue and personalities in the franchise, even if it was technically flawed at launch.

“It embodies a desert vibe, a Mojave vibe, that’s so key to that game,” explains the co-creator. “That dusty, desolate iconic highway feeling of the game is so much fun to bring into the show.”

In the series narrative, a long time has elapsed since the events of the New Vegas game by the time the protagonists make their way there. Nevertheless, the creators hint that it will honor the player’s journey.

Crafting a Tangible World

The Fallout TV series is notable for its tactile feel – its makers insisted on physical models and environments were fabricated, reflecting the cobbled-together nature of the towns in the games.

“Being a genre enthusiast, so many productions I watch, I’m aware that they’re all filmed against a digital backdrop,” comments another of the showrunners. “The key objective of an adaptation, particularly of a interactive medium, is to feel like it’s tangible.”

Actually, almost everything you see on-screen is practical, even the infamously terrifying radioactive creatures known as Deathclaws. In the show, they are brought to life with puppets, and were by all accounts rather intimidating up close.

A Labor of Love

The Fallout series works because it is crafted by accomplished storytellers who are also passionate gamers, alongside the original creators behind the source material. This shared passion for the lore is evident in the final product.

The new batch of episodes is launching on a weekly basis rather than as a binge-able batch, offering a different experience from the initial release. This schedule will allow for a new viewing experience, something the team themselves are excited to witness.

“It's richer, it’s larger in scale, it’s wittier, it has a lot of twists,” teases the game director. “I am excited to seeing what people think.”
