Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
