Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
An important official stated the attack rendered him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
